SIERRA VISTA - After his own search for a way to digitize his family's photographs, Marc Tibesar of Tibby's Computers decided to start his own slide scanning and photo scanning service.
The recent wildfires in California serve as an example of how quickly families can lose their belongings, he said, and family slides and photographs are usually one of the first things people try to save or recover from a disaster.
Even when repairing computers, customers are usually first concerned about losing their digital photographs, he said.
When he sent his own family photos to be scanned and saved on CD's what he got back wasn't what he hoped for.
Details in the photographs were missing from the scanned images and the colors didn't match. So, Tibesar decided to do the scanning himself and create Arizona Scanning, a division of Tibby's Computers, in the process.
After testing several different commercial grade scanners, Tibesar chose one that scans with greater detail at 600 dots per inch, allowing photographs to be enlarged and, 3000 dots per inch, allowing slides to be enlarged if needed.
He also offers high speed service, scanning in 100 photos in under five minutes.
Customers can "leave paper behind" by having slides and photos stored on CD or DVD disks and by keeping copies of them in a safety deposit box or with relatives, so they won't have to worry about losing all their slides and photos in a disaster, Tibesar said.
Tibesar will offer the service nationally in January when he completes his Arizona Scanning Web site.
Photo enhancement, restoration services and DVD slideshows also will be available.
